OS X Mountain Lion: Disappearing Side Bar

Recently, I shut down my computer and started it up to see that my notifications center was gone, almost like that part of the menu bar was sliced off. When I get notifications, they appear and make noise but then disappear, and there is no way I can access this. Please help!
